MISS HONG KONG 2012

The Standard, 27-Aug-2012: The Miss Hong Kong beauty pageant got a byte messy in the end last night before the crowning of university student Carat Cheung Ming-nga. For computer servers of pageant organizers Television Broadcasts judges crashed, stopping TV viewers from casting the decisive votes and forcing the judges to make the final decision. Cheung, 24, was one of three beauties - the others being Jacqueline Wong Sum-wing, 23, and Tracy Chu Chin- suet, 24 - selected by the judges earlier for the decisive round, which was to be decided by a tally of viewers' vote before the crash. Cheung became the early favorite after winning the Miss International Goodwill. In the end, Wong, also a university student, and Chu, an executive assistant, were named first and second runner-up. Jennifer Shum Hang-yee, 23, won the title of Miss Photogenic. Cheung will compete in next year's Miss World pageant, to be held in Jakarta and Bali, Indonesia.

"Jung" and "dynamisch" are words to describe the new Mister Switzerland 2012. He is Sandro Cavegn. Runner-up for the prestigious title was Dario Hold. Rounding out the top six were Philipp Wyss, Ronny Lnenicka, Steven Epprecht, and Lavdrim Sylegmanii. The contest was held tonight in Zürich at Maag Hall.

MUZ ROKU 2012

There are new official hunks in Czech Republic and Slovak Republic! Robert Anderle, 24, is the new Muz Roku CR; Karol Partika, 29 (and a soccer player!), is the new Muz Roku SR. They were elected last night during a gala ceremony attended by another official hunk, Mister International 2011 Cesar Curti of Brazil.

The new Miss and Mister Toledo 2012 are Laura Díaz Gallego and Moisés Rodríguez. The contest, organized by Félix Ramiro, was held over the weekend in the Hotel Beatriz. Runners-up for the Miss Toledo 2012 title were Ruth Sánchez and Lucia Tapia. Runners-up for the Mister Toledo 2012 title were  José María Muñoz y Javier Calvo Suela.

Thank god Miss World 2012 is over and done with! On to bigger and bigger things! The new Miss and Mister Melilla 2012 are Paula Solórzano and Pablo Fernández Pineda. They were elected Saturday night during a very competitive contest without a pre-determined outcome.  The contest was held in Melilla's Auditorium Carvajal. Runners-up for the Miss Melilla 2012 title were Patricia Lara and Sara Ruiz de Clavijo. Runners-up for the Mister Melilla 2012 title were Ignacio Prada and Estanislao Rubén.

200 DAYS, 20 CITIES, 5,000 APPLICANTS

China Daily, 16-Aug-2012: After more than 200 days, more than 20 cities and 5,000 applicants, China is about to choose who's the fairest in the land. The Miss Universe China 2012 beauty pageant kicked off in December 2011 and is now entering its final stage, as the national director Yue-Sai Kan presents 22 beauties for the final on Sept 1, in Shanghai. With an average height of 1.75 meters and age of 22, the women come from diverse backgrounds, including an opera singer, dance teacher and college students. "The forthcoming month will be critical for what Kan calls the"creme de la creme", as they undergo a month-long intensive training course at the Kerry Hotel in Shanghai Pudong. Kan calls this a "phoenix-from-the-flames" process". They will take a 12-course "Chinese lady" training class that includes table manners, English speaking, yoga, and performing arts, under the care of a galaxy of teachers from Japan, France and Italy. MISS AND MISTER FUERTEVENTURA 2012

The new Miss and Mister Fuerteventura 2012 were elected over the weekend. Miss Fuerteventura 2012 is Izaskun Carranza. First runner-up for the title was Idaira Rodríguez. Rounding out the Miss Fuerteventura 2012 competitors were Chelo Ramírez, Yaiza Ramos, María Dolores Jorge, Rebeca Campos, Merichel Dieppa, Nayara Santana, Katia López, Julia Castro, Amalia Pérez, and Estefanía Padrón. The new Mister Fuerteventura 2012 is Alain León. First runner-up was Pablo Noriega. Rounding out the field for Mister Fuerteventura 2012 were David Paula, Felipe Estupiñan, Pedro Santiago Morales, Javier Felipe Losada, Luis Murillo, and José González. 

BS students of geography will know that Fuerteventura is one of the Islas Canarias, or Canary Islands. It is the second largest of the Canary Islands, after Tenerife. In 2009, UNESCO declared the island a biosphere reserve.
