“It (the winning moment) was exactly how I had dreamt it would be ever since I was a kid,” admitted the beauty from Uttaranchal, minutes after being crowned by her mentor Sushmita Sen. “I’ve always wanted to bring back the crown to my country just like Sushmita did, and now I have the opportunity,” said the 18-year-old DU student, who beat 1,800 girls to win the crown.
Shilpa Singh from Mumbai and Arlette Grao from Chennai were declared first and second runners-up by the panel of celebrity judges comprising actors Mugdha Godse and Harman Baweja, film director Santosh Sivan, fashion designer Neeta Lulla, and Olympic medal winner Mary Kom. With titles like I Am She Photogenic 2012, Miss Tourism Queen of The Year International 2011, Miss Asian Supermodel 2011 India (People’s Republic China) and Miss Teen India 2009 (Miss Beautiful Smile and Miss Beautiful Skin) already in her kitty, it wasn’t a surprise that Urvashi would take home the title too.
The 5’9’’ beauty is also a national-level basketball player and has competed in long jump, high jump, volleyball and kho-kho at the district-level. She is an internationally-trained dancer in Bharatanatyam and Kathak as well. But what is her strategy to win the Miss Universe crown, which has eluded India since Lara Dutta’s victory in 2000?
“One needs to prepare for a long time. And I have been doing it since the age of 15 when I took up modelling.” According to the judges, it was also her dedication. “Urvashi would take down notes and come back fully prepared for grooming sessions the next day,” fashion choreographer of the event Imran Khan, said. So, what’s next? The movies? “Movies aren’t my focus now. I have a lot of offers from Bollywood and South, but I have put them on hold,” Urvashi said.
