MISS UNIVERSO BRASIL 2013

This weekend proved to be a bonanza for pageant fans! Some may have only been aware of - and cared about - Miss World 2013. But in just about every continent there was a contest, and South America was one of them.

On Saturday night, in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, Miss Mato Grosso Jakelyne de Oliveira, 20, won the highly coveted and very competitive Miss Universo Brasil 2013 title. First runner-up was Miss Minas Gerais Janaína Barcelos, 25; second runner-up was Miss Bahia Priscila Cidreira, 22. Rounding out the top five were Miss Paraná Isis Stocco and Miss São Paulo Bruna Michels.

While we were hot for the studly co-hosts of Miss World, Kamal Ibrahim Daniel Mananta, we think that the studly co-host of Miss Universo Brasil 2013, Sergio Marone, has them beat!

MISS UNIVERSE NORWAY 2013

Mari Ekeløf Chauhan, 24, is the new Miss Universe Norway 2013. She won the title on Saturday night.

FIVE THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT MISS WORLD 2013

1. She May Be Miss Philippines, But She’s From America! Just more proof that the United States brews the best women, am I right? Megan, 23, was actually born in Alexandra, Va. to a Filipino mother and an American father, according to the Guardian Express. Her family moved to the Philippines when she was 10 years old.
 2. She’s A TV Star. You won’t see Megan on any American television, but she launched her career in the entertainment business at the age of 15 when she appeared on the Filipino talent show StarStruck. After finishing in the top six, Megan has gone on to act in Filipino shows and appear on reality TV. She has also hosted several shows for the network Studio 23.
3. But Acting Isn’t All She Aspires To. Megan also wants to get behind the camera! She is currently studying digital filmmaking at De La Salle – College of Saint Benilde in Manila, Philippines. “I have always wanted to send a message through my films, whether it be an eye-opener or just something a little unusual to the eye,” she states in her Miss World introduction video.
 4. She Was A High School Geek. Megan admits that she was way more into technology than everyone in her classes and that she was always the nerd in school — but we’ve never seen a geek look like her!
5. Her Celebrity Crush. Who is her dreamy leading man fantasy? Zac Efron, she revealed in an interview with the Cosmopolitan. Hear that, Zac? You could date Miss World!

THE GIRL CHILD

Miss Universe 2012 Olivia Culpo (foreground 2nd L) wearing floral garlands, arrives to meet women (in blue) at a school in New Delhi September 28, 2013. The women whom Culpo came to the school to visit used to clear human waste for a living, a practice which is now banned in India, and currently are employed in cottage industries such as candle-making. Jagran Post, 28-Sep-2013 (From Agency Reports): Miss Universe 2012 Olivia Culpo on Friday began her official tour of India. She will raise concern about the girl child issues in the country. Designer Sanjana Jon will accompany her for the tour.
"It is such an important social cause. We will be celebrating the girl child and are against violence against women. We needed someone like her who is so young and has the heart to associate herself with such a cause," Jon said.
Culpo, 21, will also be going to Mumbai, where superstar Salman Khan will be associating himself with the cause.
"She will go to Mumbai as well. Salman Khan will join us in a press conference there. Other people from the fraternity like Lata Mangeshkar (singer) and Sajid-Wajid (composer duo) will also be joining the cause," she added.
The Miss Universe is visiting India for the first time and she will be seen in Indo-western attires.
"She will be wearing Indo-western skirts and lehengas. She will also be in a sari for a photo shoot as it is tough for someone to wear a sari if they are not used to it. I also want her to wear a traditional Punjabi suit," said Jon.
Jon also said that Culpo has shown her love for Hindi films and might even be interested to be a part of the movie industry.
"She is perfect for Bollywood. She loves our movies. I think she will be interested to be a part of the industry as well. I hope she and Salman bhai work together," Jon said.

BORN IN THE USA

No, we don't mean "Born in the USA," the 1980's hit song by rock-n-roller Bruce Springsteen. We mean "Born in the USA" Miss Philippines Megan Young, the new Miss World 2013!

BBC, 28-Sep-2013:The 2013 Miss World pageant has been won by Miss Philippines, Megan Young, on the Indonesian island of Bali.
US-born Ms Young, 23, beat 126 other contestants and pledged to be "the best Miss World ever".
The competition was moved to Bali from the capital, Jakarta, because of protests from hardline Muslim groups.
Security for Saturday's event was high in Bali, a resort island with a majority Hindu population, but no further demonstrations were reported.
Miss France, Marine Lorphelin, came second in the contest and Miss Ghana, Carranzar Naa Okailey Shooter, took third place.
Wearing a glittering gown, Ms Young, who moved to the Philippines at the age of 10, wept as the Miss World sash was put over her shoulder by 2012 winner Miss China.
She told the cheering crowd in Nusa Dua in southern Bali she would "be myself in everything I do, to share what I know and to educate people".

Indonesia is the world's most populous Muslim country and the organisers had originally offered to abandon the contest's bikini round in an attempt to address complaints of pornography and immorality.
Protests were led by the hardline Islamic Defenders' Front (FPI), which had planned to cross to the island from East Java but were prevented when the port was shut late on Friday.
The event, broadcast in 180 countries, was guarded by heavily armed police with water cannon while some 1,000 FPI members held a prayer session at a mosque outside Jakarta.

MISS WORLD 2013 - WHO WOWED US

Who will be the new Miss World 2013? Expectation has never been so much on tip toe! Who wowed Beauty School? Well, who wowed Dean Harris, that is.

In alphabetical order, these 15 wowed Dean Harris: Australia, Brazil, Cameroon, France, Ghana, Guyana, Indonesia, Italy, Jamaica, Japan, Peru, Philippines, Spain, Ukraine, and United States of America. And on Dean Harris' top 15 "bubble" are Denmark and Lebanon.

When Dean Harris announced his Miss World wow'ers at the staff meeting, all hell broke loose. Prof. Chandni almost choked on her chicken curry because India was not on the list. She had no problem with the relative lack of Latinas on the list, as she is "soooooooooo f*ing" tired of Latinas. Also, Prof. Chandni said she would toss out half of those on Dean Harris' list, replacing them with such lovely ladies as Bosnia and Herzegovina, Botswana, Cote d'Ivoire, England, Ireland, Namibia, Netherlands, PR China, and Tunisia.

Boris, BS Security Guard, was pissed off that Croatia was not on Dean Harris' list. He threatened to withhold certain special services from Dean Harris in retaliation for the omission.

Prof. Scribner opined: "I have two things to say. 1. If there is one pageant that is more 'pre-cooked' that Miss Universe, it is Miss World. The deal was done two weeks ago, y'all. 2. Lady Morley...umm...oh, that is right, she is not a Lady...I mean Mrs. Morley will surely put four to five good Muslim girls in the top 15."

Finally, Lorraine, Madge, and Hedda Hunter asked collectively: "Miss World? Oh, is that sad little contest that the Miss USA first runner-up goes to still around?"

P.S. As you know, Beauty School (well, Dean Harris, that is) was honored to participate in Global Beauties' Miss World 2013 Leaderboard. Check out the final Leaderboard now!

He hopes that Watimanywa will make a good representation of the country at next year’s Miss World.

The event was colored by music performances from Judith Wambula alias Lady Jay Dee and Ugandan musician Michel Rossi and traditional dances were performed by One Star.

UNIVERSAL TNT

Over the weekend, the twin island nation of Trinidad and Tobago (aka "TNT") elected its delegate to Miss Universe 2013. She is Catherine Miller, 21. She won the coveted title over 11 other women during a gala show held at One Woodbrook Place Plaza, Woodbrook. First runner-up was Jessica Didier; second runner-up was Sarah Radday. Rounding out the top six were Stephanie Pemberton, Lee-Ann Forbes, and Kanika Clark. The final question for the top three - Catherine, Jessica, and Sarah - was about the new Miss America 2014 Nina Davuluri: what advice they would give Davuluri to deal with the racist remarks made about Indian ethnicity.

OMG you don't know how much we love it when Queens make the front page!

PREMIUM RESTROOM ACCESS

Washington Post
, 22-Sep-2013:
Nina Davuluri is halfway out the door of one of the dining rooms at Sequoia in Georgetown on Saturday when the applause begins. She has just finished lunch with members of the Upakar Foundation — an Indian American scholarship foundation, her first nonmedia appearance since taking the Miss America title on Sept. 15 — and since she’s not wearing her crown, it has taken this long for the rest of the room to catch on to who she is.
“Oh!” she says, laughing uncomfortably. “Thank you!”
“Pic?” asks a table of four 20-something female brunchers, pantomiming a camera click. But there’s no time. Davuluri is whisked out of the room and down the hallway, where she receives perhaps one of the most banal perks offered in her weird, wonderful job: premium restroom access.
