The new Miss Switzerland/Miss Suisse/Miss Schweiz/Miss Svizzera 2014 is Laetitia Guarino, 21 and a medical student. She won the prestigious title Saturday evening, 11-Oct, during a gala, ceremony televised live from the Place Fédérale in Bern. She hails from the city of Vaud in Suisse Romande, the western, French-speaking part of Switzerland. Since 2000, only two other Miss Switzerland winners have come from Vaud, and coincidentally proved themselves to be fierce contenders for the Miss Universe title - Laurianne Gilliéron (Miss Universe 2006 second runner-up) and Whitney Toyloy (Miss Universe 2009 top ten finisher). Alas, Laetitia is not likely to participate in Miss Universe this January. The Miss Switzerland Organization was restructured earlier this year; part of the restructuring turned the titleholder's role into a purely national one that focuses on a single, charitable cause. During her year as Miss Switzerland, Laetitia will be the ambassador for the Fondation Corelina, which is devoted to addressing heart problems in infants.
